This acts like the Red Zone in other maps, where artillery rains down on a marked positioned, but the Black Zone differs by actually destroying the builds and terrain it lands on. One of the most important parts of Karakin is the introduction of the Black Zone mechanic. There are also some tunnels that can be found around the map, allowing players to sneak around and flank defensive positions. Aesthetically and even thematically it's very similar to Miramar, with wide-open areas that feature little in terms of cover and places to hide, but due to its smaller size, it plays at a pace akin to Sanhok. Karakin is an African map that's on the smaller side, only allowing a maximum of 64 players instead of the typical 100. It's also worth noting that Erangel has been remastered since its original version, increasing the fidelity and redesigning certain parts to fit around the parkour mechanics. Some of the most highly contested locations on the map are the school and military base, largely due to the high-quality loot that can be found in these areas. It's populated by small outcroppings of buildings, towns, villages, and some more notable locations, like the airport, harbour, flooded town, and even a nuclear power plant.Įrangel features a lot of variation in gameplay because of its size, standing as one of the largest in the game, which means you'll encounter many long-range fights in the open fields and towns, and CQC battles in the more restricted areas. It takes place on an abandoned Russian military island, that has quite a rustic feel due to the rural, woodland nature of the area. No map select, however, means that people don't really know what they're getting into.Erangel is the original PUBG map which debuted with the game's early access release back in 2017. has expressed hesitation about a map select option in the past, mostly because the game has already effectively doubled its matchmaking load with first and third-person options, and adding in a map select could just continue to multiply the technical challenge from that perspective. Savage is something very different, which complicates things. People hated Miramar when the developer added that, and while that map launched with a ton of problems it at least kept similar pacing to the original Erangel map. We'll see how it all plays out as testing continues: one concern I have is the diffusion of gameplay if there are two distinct types of maps in the rotation instead of just the one. Savage also comes with a jungle theme, which is a reasonably far departure from the bombed-out Eastern European and Northern Mexican maps currently in the game. That's the idea with Savage: like Fortnite, it's designed to get you fighting quicker, to discourage campers and to lower the overall match length. And while that remains a key reason why some people like PUBG instead of Fortnite, it's clear that PUBG could use a slightly more aggressive mode, especially given the demands of its new mobile platform. One of the biggest differentiators between PUBG and chief competitor Fortnite Battle Royale, besides the obvious visual differences, is map size: PUBG's maps are much bigger, and that means a slower, more deliberate pace that doesn't force you into conflict nearly so often as in its wacky counterpart.
